Cash and equivalents is assets type with maturity less than 3 months and has stable value.
Short-term investments in marketable securities is assets type with maturity less than 12 months and has relatively unstable value.
Cash & short-term investments is the most liquid part of company’s assets. If company is in a great need of liquidity cash & short-term investments can be readily used. That is why this type of company’s assets is usually used in liquidity ratios.
